The legend of Thousand egg omelette has its roots in 1535, when emperor Charles V , fresh from the victory in Tunis, was welcomed with triumphal honors by the monks of the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula . To feed the sovereign and his numerous retinue, the religious prepared a gargantuan banquet characterized by a legendary omelette composed of a thousand eggs, an episode documented by historians of the caliber of Giovan Battista Pacichelli .
For about thirty years, the Pro Loco of Padula celebrates this event with an evocative historical re-enactment in the monumental complex of the Certosa ( UNESCO heritage since 1998). The event, organized by Pro Loco Padula, has been around for approx 30 years , attracts thousands of tourists who witness the preparation of the omelette in one colossal steel pan , created by local artisans inspired by Leonardo's mechanisms. Between figures in costume , music and traditional dishes , the event transforms history into a great collective celebration that involves the whole Vallo di Diano .
