The Sammaro Gorges and Ghost Towns Itinerary
The journey begins by car to the municipality of Sacco, where the vehicle can be left near the entrance to the hiking trail. From here, the route continues on foot for about 20 minutes along a path descending towards the spectacular Sammaro Gorges, among the most fascinating natural sites in Cilento. A deep limestone canyon emerges, carved by vertical rock walls, crystal-clear springs and emerald-green pools surrounded by lush vegetation.

The area is also one of the last refuges of the European otter, a rare species that inhabits the pristine waters of the river.
After exploring the gorges, the ascent follows a stepped path and an ancient stone-paved track. Through forests and untouched landscapes, the trail reaches Sacco Vecchia, a medieval settlement perched on a rocky outcrop: a natural balcony offering breathtaking views over the surrounding valley.
After returning to the car, the journey continues across the scenic Ponte di Sacco, a single-arch bridge immersed in the Cilento landscape.
The day reaches its conclusion in Roscigno Vecchio, one of the best-preserved ghost villages in Italy. Evacuated at the beginning of the 20th century due to slow but relentless landslides, the village has remained frozen in time: the central square, the Museum of Rural Civilization and the Church of San Nicola di Bari tell the story of a community interrupted in its daily life.
Walking among the stone houses and cobbled streets creates the sensation of entering a suspended world. At sunset, the golden light embraces the stone façades, transforming the village into a timeless setting.
