How to get to Piana del Sele

From Naples International Airport Capodichino (NAP), the municipalities of the Piana and Valle del Sele can be reached by taxi, private transfer, or direct bus services. Alternatively, travellers can take the Alibus shuttle to Naples Central Station and continue by train to Battipaglia or Eboli.

From Salerno Costa d’Amalfi and Cilento Airport (QSR), the municipalities of the area can be reached by bus, taxi, or private transfer.

For destinations in the inland or hilly areas, travelling by car is often the most convenient option.

The main railway stations in the area served by Trenitalia are Battipaglia, Eboli, Pontecagnano Faiano, and Contursi Terme. Capaccio-Roccadaspide Station is also an excellent arrival point for the southern part of the Piana del Sele.

  • From Naples: regional trains to Battipaglia and Eboli (approximately 1 hour)
  • From Salerno: regional trains to Battipaglia, Eboli, and Contursi Terme (journey times ranging from 15 to 60 minutes)

The main public transport operators serving the area are SITA Sud and Busitalia Campania.

For regional train services (Battipaglia–Salerno–Naples), the official Trenitalia app provides the most up-to-date timetables and travel information. Bus and train tickets can also be conveniently purchased through the Unico Campania app. For journey planning, routes, and real-time timetables, the Moovit app is recommended.

The main road connections are:

  • A2 “Autostrada del Mediterraneo” (formerly the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria), with exits at Battipaglia, Eboli, Pontecagnano Faiano, Campagna, and Contursi Terme.
  • Travellers coming from Rome or Naples can take the A1 or the A30 Caserta–Salerno motorway, then join the A2 heading south.
  • The SS18 Tirrena Inferiore is a convenient alternative route, running parallel to the A2 and connecting the municipalities of the Piana del Sele, making it particularly useful for local travel.

Recommendations:

  • For the hilltop villages and inland areas, travelling by car is generally the most convenient and efficient option, as public transport services may operate with limited frequency.
  • Before travelling, check whether the historic centres of the main towns are subject to Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL) and verify parking availability.

There are no commercial passenger ports directly in the Piana del Sele. However, travellers arriving from the Amalfi Coast or sailing along the coastline can reach the Port of Salerno by ferry or passenger boat operated by Travelmar and Alicost, with services running mainly during spring and summer.

From the Port of Salerno, visitors can continue their journey by train, bus, taxi, or car to the municipalities of the Piana and Valle del Sele, including Battipaglia, Eboli, and the inland areas. Likewise, travellers staying inland can easily reach Salerno by road or rail and then board a ferry to the Amalfi Coast, combining land and sea transport for a convenient and scenic journey.
